New kit for Golden Drifters
The longer waited football season has arrived, and Golden Drifters are gearing themselves up for their debut season in the South African Brewers (SAB) league. On 2 August, the football club unveiled their new home and away kit for their 2018/2019 campaign.
Golden Drifters is the first team from Johannesburg north to participate in the SAB league, and it is currently based in Zandspruit.
Speaking during the official launch of the kit at Monash University, the former Orlando Pirates player, Helman Mkhelele, motivated and challenged the players to be more focused when playing in a professional league.
“Once you become a professional player, your first target should be to play for your national team,” he urged the players. “You should be more focused and remember to take football as a career. I was once at your stage and I know what you will go through. Playing in the SAB league is a good opportunity for you to showcase your talent because there would be more people scouting on you. So make sure that you take this stage of your career seriously.”
Mkhelele also urged the players to appreciate that the talent they possess is from God, therefore it is important for them to maintain good relationship with their creator.
During the ceremony, Golden Drifters also unveiled their three coaches and a captain.
In an interview with Cosmo City Chronicle, Golden Drifters president Proud Shoko said playing in the SAB league was a milestone for the club.
“I would like to thank God for the successful launch, and I am excited for the club’s official colors,” he told Cosmo City Chronicle. “We will be using red and white colors for the home kit, then blue and white for the away kit, both kits are branded with adidas. We would also like to thank Monash University for the venue and our stakeholders like Mkhelele. We thank our sponsors for making the dream of the black child a success by making sure that the players have got the right attire and equipment for them to be ready to play.”
Shoko added that he was so grateful and looking forward for an exciting journey which could be a challenge and motivating at the same time.
“As we are getting ready for the season, we are nervous and excited at the same time,” said Shoko. “It is going to be a challenging one because it would be our first time to play in the castle league. However, we are making sure that we get all the resources we need to do our best during the entire season. We have no doubt in the players and coaches we have selected, so our aim is to finish the season in the top three.”
The selected head coach Bonakele Yonke said he would do his best to help the team in its debut season.
“It’s a new beginning and we need to boost confidence among the players. I believe we will do well in our debut season because I trust the players I have at the moment,” Said the coach.
The SAB league is set to roar into life on the weekend of 25 August 2018 until June 2019. During the season, Golden Drifters will also participate in the Nedbank Cup, with their first match being against Mofolo BT Stars on 9 September at Popo Molefe stadium.
