Residents go for weeks without power
Cosmo City’s extension 6 residents who live in Nigeria Street have gone for more than a week without electricity, claiming that their situation is now out of control.
The residents say their lives have been so difficult since Eskom workers removed their electricity meter boxes last month.
“They took out our meter boxes claiming that something needs to be fixed,” said a resident who identified himself only as Mabubula. “we know that our area is always facing constant power cuts, but this time we have gone for a long time without electricity and it is sad. “
“Surely, something has to be done in our street,” said Angelina Makhubele. “We are not sure what is happening. If they are fixing the boxes, they have to update us, why is it only us who suffer? Somehow we feel unequally treated. It is not easy to survive without power.”
Some residents allege that Eskom standby workers are demanding money from residents in order to install power, angering the residents even more. “it is festive season so some of them are just looking for money from us. they come to our houses and take meter boxes claiming they need to be fixed,” said one resident who preferred to be anonymous. “The sad thing is that when they come back they ask for money.”
Angry residents are venting their frustrations on social network sites, most of them have even attempted to strike demanding that Eskom do something.
Efforts to get a comment from Eskom were fruitless. Their media desk did not answer our calls.
