Zandspruit soccer tournament held
“Our aim is to have a big soccer tournament in every three months,” said Zandspruit Youth Forum leader David Mangena during a one day soccer tournament held on 22 November in Zandspruit.
Hundreds of soccer enthusiasts turned out to witness the tournament, which was organised by Zandspruit Soccer Forum. Kasi Shakers of Cosmo City beat Honeydew Sundowns in the final to win the tournament.
Mangena said the community needs to become known for good things instead of getting attention through violent strikes. “We need to inspire the young generation by good things happening in the community, and football is one of the positive things in Zandspruit.”
During the tournament, Mangena, who has been working with the community since 2010, awarded trophies and soccer uniforms to the winners.
“I am very happy for the winners,” Mangena said. “They must always work hard to keep winning. I was expecting that the trophy will remain in Zandspruit. I am also happy for the people who came in numbers to support.”
Hosting a successful tournament is not always easy, Mangena said.
“We are extremely happy to see community members enjoying local football,” said Faraday Maepa, one of the tournament organisers. “It is a positive programme in the community because it helps young players to realise their dreams.”
